The crowd at the 2019 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras were left a little disappointed when not a single one of the 197 floats were Bohemian Rhapsody themed.
With the success of the 2018 Bryan Singer film Bohemian Rhapsody, and the Oscar winning performance by Rami Malek, expectations were high that the float precession would jump onboard the remarkable success of the film.
So why was there no Queen themed floats? Beauregard “Bo” Luke explains.
“Freddy was so four years ago. Literally. We had a Freddy Mercury theme four years ago. And to be fair, we have had at least one Freddy Mercury or Queen based float for the past 20 years,” said Luke.
Ironically, there was one Brian May themed float, but as usual no-one knew who the hell that was.
The big talking point of the night was the NSW police involvement. The NSW police had their own float, raising attention to the current domestic violence epidemic.
“The cops have come a long way,” said Luke. “This years float is heaps better than their float in 1978, which was unofficially known as ‘Stick Time’. When the police turned up in 1978 we were kind of just hoping that it was a late entry of Village People fans, but unfortunately that was not the case.”
