“I’ll be honest, I picked them by accident,” said footy fan, Wes Tee (34) of Penrith.
After NSW managed to win an Origin game on Sunday night, the ramifications of the shock victory have been felt throughout the gambling world. Raking in millions of dollars from all those who backed Queensland, Sportsbet has announced they have made a single solitary payout to the lone Blues backer.
After double checking this wasn’t an error, a Sportsbet account in Penrith, New South Wales, did in fact place a bet backing the Blues despite losing Game 1 this year and 10 of the last 12 series. Once the numbers were crunched, the grand total came to a whopping $7.35.
“I’m still shocked one bloke backed them,” said Sportsbet representative, Cash Taker (43). “But, a bets a bet so good on him.”
When we caught up with this fan, he was celebrating his victory down at Penrith Panther’s with a schooey or two before work.
“I’ll be honest, I picked them by accident,” said footy fan, Wes Tee (34) of Penrith. “I meant to pick the Maroons and put down a dollar. So I’m pretty happy I got two schooners out of it.”
When asked if he was going to back the Blues in Game 3, Wes shook his head.
“Don’t be silly. I’m gunna quit while I’m ahead,” laughed Wes.
With Game 3 only a few weeks away, Sportsbet now has time to brace for an unexpected increase in people backing the Blues. Early estimates suggest it may increase to six or possibly seven people right across the country.
