Normally a 21st birthday party is a time of celebration, but for one Adelaide family it was a cause for concern.
“We were celebrating Trevor’s 21st so naturally we invited uncle Stan. When he arrived, he had a new haircut and people commented on it, but he didn’t say anything back like, “Did I get a haircut? No. I had them all cut.” Something didn’t seem right,” said Trev’s mum, Hanna Smithson (49).
Not long into the night, someone mentioned the local cemetery and Stan continued to remain silent.
“It was odd,” said Trev’s girlfriend, Amy Cole (21). “At no point did he say, “Yeah. It’s the dead center of town.”
Trevor’s dad, Rick (49), also noticed the signs.
“Amy called Trev her boyfriend, and Stan didn’t immediately say, “I don’t have a boyfriend. But I’ve slept with a few.”
When it came time for the speeches, Stan remained silent throughout.
“Not a single interruption, call out, or ‘Why was he born so ugly’ song – nothing,” said Trev, beside himself with worry.
Once the guests had gone home, the family called everyone together for an intervention where Stan admitted to being off his game. As it turned out, Stan had a recent stomach infection which meant he could not drink alcohol for an entire week so he was out of sorts. The family said all was forgiven provided Stan is back in form by the grand final next Sunday at Trevor and Amy’s place.
After telling Stan he was so worried that he had a headache, Stan suddenly said, “Trev, with a head like that it should ache.”
Upon hearing this chestnut, the entire family breathed a sigh of relief.
